Can I have two different businesses with one GST number?

Yes, if your two businesses are located in same state you can have one GST number for both of them.

As per Sec 25 of CGST Act, it is mandatory to obtain different registration number for business conducting in different states under same PAN.

Although, assesses can get separate registration for the different business verticals in the same state also. But this is completely optional.

If you go for separate registration for different business verticals, it will increase your administration cost like no. of filing of returns. Also, your business verticals will be treated as two different entities, if you want to transfer any goods from one branch to another branch, GST will become payable even on such transfer also. Although, with the separate GST number, it will be easy to maintain your financial statements for both the entities separately. Beside this, it is beneficial for the assessment purpose also.

In my opinion, if you want to manage your business separately, you should go with separate GST Number, but if do not want to increase your administration cost, it would be better to obtain single GST number.
